 | What is Coenzyme Q10? Why is it so important? |
 |
| CoQ10 is a vitamin-like substance found in every cell in the body. It is one of the most important nutrients in the human body and also in all living organisms including plants and animals.
CoQ10 is essential for health and vitality and for life itself. Without it, we would die. CoQ10 has two important roles. First, it plays a critical role in production of energy in every cell. Your cells or your body needs energy to carry out it functions, from the pumping of your heart to breathing, from walking to thinking.
Secondly, CoQ10 is also a powerful antioxidant that neutralises free radicals. Good health starts and stays with healthy cells. And nothing threathens your cells more today than free radical damage. As you know, free radicals are highly reactive molecules, produced naturally in our cells during oxidation. These free radicals attack your cell, membranes and your DNA itself. When cells are damaged, your health is jeopardised, bringing on diseases and speeding up ageing.
There are many forms of CoQ10 available in the market and the best form of CoQ10 is the water-soluble or the hydrosoluble form of CoQ10 because it is proven to be the most effective in terms of absorption into the bloodstream.

I have been trying to source a particular antioxidant unsuccessfully. The antioxidant is lipoic acid, also known as alpha lipoic acid. Both Guardian and Georgetown do not stock it. Most of the pharmacists are not even familiar with it.
Using the internet, I discovered that this antioxidant is sold in the US under different labels. Biochem, Carlson and Natrol are some. Natrol seems to offer the largest variety in potency. I would like to purchase this in its pure form, preferably of |

| If these 2 places do not sell it, most likely it is not available in Malaysia. I suggest that you purchase over the Internet. Perhaps you might find it being sold by a direct selling company. I have checked with a Patent Drugs Firm as well as a Herbal Company and they do not sell this product. However, the Patent Drug Firm stated that if there is enough demand for this drug then they would consider importing it.

My husband is having fungus infection of his leg for a few years. A few months ago, he consulted a GP and was given cream together with oral medication. After receiving the treatment for two months, the condition seems have improved. The doctor advised my husband to continue the medication for another two months to ensure he is totally cured. I would like to check if the oral medication which is a white tablet named "UP 500" will cause any side effects. If so, please advise. Is this t |

| It would be helpful if you could obtain the name of the medicine from your own doctor. I guess that he probably gave your husband an anti-fungal medicine. The common side effects are nausea, rashes, diarrhoea and liver toxicity.
The anti-fungal treatment given to your husband should not affect your chances of having a baby or have any effect if you are pregnant.

 | My brother has been on amitriphline (150mg) taken at one go for the last 25 years. Ten years ago he started taking 1mg of Xanax every morning. What are the known possible side effects for someone on such a therapy for so long?
If he increases his dosage to 20mg he feels much better although bloated. The reason he takes his Amitriptyline at night is because when he takes it in divided doses in the day he feels too drowsy to work. He is looking at the possibility of switching to Prozac so |
 |
| Some of the possible side effects of Amitriptyline are dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, blurred vision, glaucoma, impotence, drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, sweating, fatigue, epileptiform seizures, orthostatic hypotension, palpitations, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmia and extra pyramidal symptoms.
As for Xanax, some side effects include drowsiness, light headedness, blurred vision, co-ordination disorders, gastro-intestinal effects, rarely agitation and confusion.
Your brother should seek his doctor's advice regarding dosage of the drugs. Under proper medical supervision most of the side effects can be reduced.
Prozac is another antidepressant drug. It can also cause drowsiness. Other side effects of Prozac are anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, fatique, tremor, sweating, anorexia, nausea, diarrhoea, dizziness and light headedness.
Before he changes his medication, your brother should seek his doctor's advice.
