I have problems with eczema and have heard that omega-3 essential fatty acid from fish can help alleviate it. Do I need to take the supplement? I have also heard that flaxseed will help clear eczema.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) are necessary for the regular functioning and improving of body functions. EFA helps to improve skin and hair condition, reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and are beneficial for skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis. They are also needed for the normal functioning and development of the brain as well; these fatty acids are not produced by the body itself, we have to supplement them through our diets. Taking fish that are rich in sources of omega-3 EFA can help to provide the supplement you need in your diet. Examples of such fish include salmon, mackeral and sardines.

Flaxseed helpt to heal eczema because it is also rich in omega-3 EFA. They are also a good source of magnesium, potassium and fibre, Vitamin B, protein and zinc. Low in saturated fats and calories, these seeds are a good alternative to high-cholesterol snacks. Medical evidence has shown that flaxseed oil helps to reduce arthritis pain and swelling as well as lower blood cholesterol. However, it is important to note that the flaxseed oil must be consumed in pure liquid or supplement form as heat (either from cooking or processing) will destroy the effects of EFA and may even create harmful free radicals in the body.

Will an alcoholic benefit from taking a Vitamin E supplement?
Yes. A number of studies have shown that α-tocopherol (vitamin E) levels decrease in alcoholics as severity of liver damage increases. Furthermore, the data also supports the role of free radicals in the development and progression of liver diseases. Therefore it is important to take a potent antioxidant like vitamin E to neutralize the free radicals and thus protect the liver from the associated oxidative damage.
